Sony Announces Firmware Roadmap for Cinema Line
Sony has released a roadmap for their cinema line firmware updates. Beginning next year and running through to 2026, firmware updates will be available for cameras including but not limited to, the SONY BURANO, FX3 and FX6.
BURANO Version 2.0
Planned for release in March 2025, BURANO Version 2.0 is equipped with an all-new 1.8x de-squeeze, new recording formats and monitoring improvements. Featuring a new 3.8K full frame crop format capable of shooting at up to 120 fps – users are now able to prioritise a faster sensor performance. Also new is the inclusion of 24 fps to the X-OCN 16:9 imager modes.

Version 2.0 adds additional higher frame rate (S & Q) modes including 66, 72, 88, 90, 96 and 110 fps.
Monitoring improvements include a standardised SDI video output for monitoring across X-OCN and XAVC as well as an on-screen display that places camera status information outside the image. It will also add a View Finder Gamma Display Assist whilst monitoring in S-Log3. Derived from the flagship VENICE camera system, Version 2.0 also includes additional exposure tools (High/Low Key) and will increase white balance memory presets from 3 to 8. Active/High Image Stabilisation will also be supported in full-frame 6K and Super 35 1.9K 16:9 imager modes. Breathing compensation and stabilisation metadata will also be added in the X-OCN codec.
FX3 Version 7.0
Planned for release in September 2025, version 7.0 will add a key update to the operational menu system, standardising the user experience across the entire cinema line. A huge benefit to filmmakers using multiple levels of cameras for production. Also includes:
- FX3 Version 7.0 will introduce a ‘BIG 6’ menu, providing quick access to adjust key camera settings (ISO, frame rate, LUT, NDs, etc.).
- Anamorphic de-squeeze 1.5x – giving the user added flexibility in regards to lens selection.
- HDMI RAW Output for Blackmagic RAW recording with Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist recorders.
FX6 Version 6.0
Planned for release in February 2026, Version 6.0 supports SDI RAW Output for Blackmagic RAW recording with Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist recorder. Also includes:
- Likewise to the FX3 Version 7.0 and like the BURANO & VENICE, the FX6 will now include a ‘BIG 6’ menu. Allowing users quick access to adjust key camera settings.
- Through the viewfinder; data will no longer be laid over the top of the image, giving the operator a clearer image and the ability to read camera info easier.
